有关“Merry Christmas”起源的问题，其实现在还是比较模糊的。最早用“Merry Christmas”可以追溯至1534年，英国的罗马天主教主教约翰·费舍尔写给英国政治家托马斯·克伦威尔的圣诞祝贺信中。到了1843年，英国的伟大作家，《双城记》作者查尔斯·狄更斯在他的作品多次使用Merry Christmas，从此便流行起来。

“Happy Christmas”是不是错的？

 

“Happy Christmas”也是正确的表达，不过只有伊丽莎白二世才这么说。因为英国王室向来讲究传统，而Merry有“微醉的”的意思，说Merry Christmas会有失女王的身份，所以每次都会说“Happy Christmas”，久而久之，在英国就有许多人和女王一样不再用merry这个词了。

在英语中，用Eve代表重大节日的前夕。所以平安夜的英文表达是：Christmas Eve。类似的表达还有：
