3．acknowledge vt.承认；确认；答谢

These effects have been acknowledged by scientists.

这些影响已经被科学家们所认可。

(1)acknowledge doing sth. 承认做了某事

acknowledge sb./sth. to be/as... 承认某人/某事……

acknowledge that...承认……

It is acknowledged that... ……是大家公认的

[点拨] acknowledge 作“承认”讲时，后接名词，动名词或从句作宾语，不接不定式。作“认为”讲时，常与as或to连用。

4．forbid (forbade/forbad，forbidden) vt.禁止，不准

Please note that food and fruit are forbidden in the library, but you are allowed to have drinks and sweets with you.

请注意食物和水果禁止带进图书馆，但是你可以带饮料和糖果。

(1)forbid sb. to do sth. 禁止某人做某事

forbid doing sth. 禁止做某事

forbid that...禁止……(从句中常用should＋动词原形)

5．resist vi. & vt.抗拒，抵抗，对抗，反抗；忍不住，禁不住

Putting a red nose on while you are stuck in traffic jam can be a good way ofresisting the tension caused by the jam.

当你遇到交通阻塞时，戴上一个红鼻子是抵抗交通阻塞带来的紧张的好办法。

[点拨] resist表示“抗拒(诱惑等)”的意思时，常与否定意义的can't/can hardly 等连用，resist后接名词、代词或动名词，但不能接不定式。

6．astonish vt.使惊讶，使惊骇

It astonishes me that he could be so thoughtless.

我真没料到他会如此轻率。

9．withdraw vt. 提取，收回；退出；(使)撤回/撤离

I wanted to withdraw $40 out of our bank account, but I'm so forgetful that I couldn't remember if 40 was spelled “fourty”or “forty”．

我本来打算从我们的账户中取出40美元，可是我记不起来40是拼作“fourty”还是“forty”。

withdraw...from... 把……从……撤离/撤回，从……取出……

withdraw from... 从……退出

withdraw from a school/one's office 退学/辞职

10．disgusting adj. 令人厌恶的，令人作呕的

But it is clear from the look on his face that he finds the taste truly disgusting.

但从他脸上的表情就能清楚地知道那味道真的令人恶心。

disgust n. & v. 厌恶，反感，恶心

with/in disgust 反感地，厌烦地

disgusted adj.(人)感到恶心，厌烦的

be/feel disgusted at/with/by... 对……感到恶心/厌烦

Much to my disgust, they refused to help.

11．harmony n. 和睦，融洽；和谐，协调

The buildings are in harmony with the natural surroundings.

那些建筑和周围自然环境十分协调。

(3)harmonize v. 使协调，和谐

 

12．response n. 回答；响应；反应

They did it in response to external pressures.

作为对外部压力的回应，他们做了这件事。

in response to 作为对……的回应/回答

respond vi. 反应，回答，回复(to)；承担责任

We were quite aware (of) how you would respond to our terms.

我们已完全意识到你将如何对我们的期限作出回应。

 

13．caution n. [U]谨慎，小心；[C]警告，告诫 vt. 警告，告诫，使小心

Use caution when you cross a busy street.

过繁忙的马路时要当心。

use caution in doing sth. 在做某事时要小心

with caution 小心地，谨慎地

give sb. a caution for... 因……给某人警告

caution sb. about.../that­clause 警告某人……

caution sb. not to do sth./against doing sth. 警告某人不要做某事

cautious adj. 小心的；谨慎的(about/of)

I caution you to hang on to that dog or tie it up.

我劝你把这条狗抓紧或者拴起来。

 

14．desperate adj. 不顾一切的；绝望的；渴望的

When you are desperate for a job you will do anything for it.

当你急需一份工作时，你会为得到这份工作做任何事情。

be desperate for sth. 渴望得到某物

be desperate to do sth. 急切地想做某事

in desperate need of... 非常需要……

in desperation 拼命地；在绝望中，在走投无路的情况下

15．overlook vt.

(1)忽视

Don't overlook any detail like that.

不要忽视像那样的细枝末节。

(2)不计较，宽恕

I'll overlook your mistake this time.

这次我会原谅你的过失。

(3)俯视，俯瞰

Our rooms overlook the garden.

从我们的房间能俯瞰整个花园。

 

16．tough adj. 艰难的；不幸的；强壮的，强健的

The reporters were asking a lot of tough questions.

记者们问了很多难以回答的问题。

as tough as nails/old boots 很强壮；坚韧不拔；雷打不动

get tough with 以强硬手段对付

be tough on 严格对待

He is tough enough to work in such a bad condition.

他身体强壮可以在艰苦的条件下工作。

他经常陷入一种笨拙和可笑的情景中，观众的民族和文化背景尽管各异，却都会被逗得开怀大笑。

regardless of the fact that... 不顾……的事实

as regards 关于；至于

With/In regard to future oil supplies, the situation is uncertain.

regardless of	“不顾，不惜”，表示不去考虑，强调主观的不管不顾
in spite of	表示转折，意为“尽管”，一般用于客观无法避免的事实，往往是不利的条件

[点拨] stuck 为 stick 的过去分词形式。

be due 的常见用法：

①预期发生；预定到达

The flight from London is due at seven o'clock in the morning.

The meeting is due to start at three.

会议三点召开。

②欠下的；应给的

You are due five days' holiday this month.

这个月你有五天假期。

③到期的，应付的

When will the first interest payments be due?

首笔利息什么时候支付？

9．call in 请……来(帮忙)

Police have been called in to help find the missing child.

已经请了警察帮着寻找失踪的孩子。

drop in on sb.＝call on sb. 拜访某人

call out 喊叫，大声说出

call back 回电话

call off 取消

 

10．make out 弄清楚；辨认出；假装

I can scarcely make out his handwriting.

我几乎认不出他的笔迹。

make up 化妆，组成，编造，弥补

make for 向……走去，有利于

我弄不明白他们在谈论什么。

1．Have you ever had trouble trying to spell a word?

你有没有拼写不出单词的时候？

have trouble (in) doing sth. 在做某事上有困难

(1)“做某事有(没有)困难”的常见的表达方式：

have some/much/great/no/little/a little difficulty (in) doing sth./with sth.

There's some/much difficulty (in) doing sth./with sth.

have (no) problem (in) doing sth./with sth.

have a hard time (in) doing sth.

(2)take the trouble to do sth.不辞辛劳地做，不厌其烦地做

Homeless people often have difficulty finding a job because they have no home addresses.

无家可归的人时常很难找到工作，因为他们没有家庭地址。

I have no difficulty/trouble with the problem/(in) working out the problem.

解决这个问题我没有困难。

[点拨] ①在have trouble/difficulty (in) doing sth.结构中，trouble和difficulty为不可数名词，而have problems/a problem中的problem是可数名词。v.­ing形式前的介词in可以省略。

②若have trouble/difficulty/problems后接名词或代词，通常用介词with。

他不断陷入尴尬而又荒唐的情景中，给不论是什么国籍或文化背景的观众都带来了极大的乐趣。

该句为复合句，which 引导非限制性定语从句，其先行词为前面整个句子的内容，which 在从句中作主语。也可用as 引导，as 在从句中作宾语，如果在主语位置上，句子用被动。

Every way I practiced reading and writing, which I used to avoid as much as possible.

我用每种方法练习阅读和写作，而这些都是我过去尽量避免的。

while still at primary school 为省略句，完整形式为：while he was still at primary school。

在含有状语从句的复合句中，若主、从句的主语一致或从句的主语是it且从句的谓语部分含be动词，这时可以把从句的主语和be动词一起省略。能这样用的连词有when， while， if， once，though， unless， as if， even if等。

本句为so...that...引导的结果状语从句。so 为副词，修饰形容词或副词，其常见搭配为：

so much/little＋不可数名词＋that­clause

[点拨] (1)such...that... 也作“如此……以至……”讲，连接结果状语从句。such 是形容词，修饰名词。其常见搭配为：

such＋a/an(＋adj.)＋可数名词单数＋that­clause

such(＋adj.)＋可数名词复数/不可数名词＋that­clause

(2)若把“so＋adj./adv.＋...”放于句首或把“such＋a/an＋(adj.)＋名词”放于句首，主句要用不完全倒装语序。

He earns so little money that he can't support his family.

他挣钱如此少，不能养活他的家庭。
