Online studies go on

 

My school in the US recently reopened, although the novel coronavirus is still a problem there. Not wanting to put off my studies, I decided to stay in China and take online classes that are provided by my school in Boston. Before every class starts, we wave (挥手) and smile behind our masks. It makes us feel better. We share our daily stories together. Our teachers are also trying to make their classes more interesting so that we won't get bored. My English teacher uses cat memes (表情包) in her presentations (展示) and introduces herself while playing her ukulele. But there is a 12-hour time difference between Beijing and the US. My classes take place from 8 pm to 4 am here. Because I'm the only student in my class who is studying online, my teachers like to put me on a big screen. Everyone can see me clearly. I have to make sure my face is washed before class starts! After my classes are over, I go to sleep right away. Sometimes, I try to enjoy the sunrise for a while. So far, so good!

Day 2

Fill up your lamp with oil

 

When we encourage someone, we usually say jiayou, which means "add oil". But why do we use this phrase (词语)?There is a story behind the phrase "add oil". It took place during the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). The phrase started with an official named Zhang Ying (1791-1856). He was the father of the famous statesman (政治家) Zhang Zhidong (1837-1909). Zhang Ying was the zhifu, or mayor (市长), of Xingyi in Guizhou. He wanted to develop local education (教育) and encourage more people to study. He sent lower officials to walk around the city at night with buckets (桶) of oil. In ancient China, people used oil lamps (灯) at night. If these officials saw the light of oil lamps in someone's home and heard the sound of recitation, they would knock on the door and say, "The mayor adds oil for your lamp!" The officials would then give the person oil so that they could study through the night. Zhang did this and paid for the oil for 13 years. Many of Xingyi's young people later became officials, poets and scholars (学者). "Add oil" became a phrase of encouragement that is still used today.

 

Day 3

Put hands on your education

 

When you're studying in a classroom, you use textbooks, pencils, paper and maybe a computer to learn. But in vocational (职业技术的) classes, you get to leave the classroom and use your hands to learn useful real-life skills. Most high schools in the US have vocational classes. These classes can include wood shop (木工车间), auto repair (汽车维修), and home economics (家政), among many others. In these classes, you work with real tools (工具) to learn different skills. For example, in wood shop, you use real woodworking tools to create things out of wood, such as tables. In auto repair, you work on real cars and learn how to fix them. And in home economics, you use kitchen appliances (厨房用具) and sewing machines (缝纫机) to learn homemaking skills. I only took one vocational class in high school. It was a design class (设计课) where I learned how to use AutoCAD, a type of software that is used by engineers to design things. I wasn't very good at it, but I did learn how difficult it can be to design a machine or a building. I think vocational classes are useful because they make students more well-rounded (全面发展的). You might not use your woodworking or auto repair skills in the future, but just knowing a little bit about them allows you to have a more diverse (丰富的) understanding of the world around you.

Is your mind on fire?

 

You might feel burned out (筋疲力尽的) after solving a difficult math problem or studying for a whole day. Are our brains really "burning" when we spend a lot of time thinking? In fact, our brains never stop burning calories (卡路里), even if we aren't thinking about anything. Our brains are powered by glucose (葡萄糖), a kind of sugar that can be found in carbohydrates (碳水化合物) like rice and noodles. The glucose goes to the brain through the bloodstream (血液). It powers the neurons (神经元) in our brains. Since our brain never really rests, it is burning energy in the form of glucose all the time. Even when we sleep, our brain needs energy to keep our body's basic functions working. These include breathing, digesting, and keeping the body warm. The brain uses up 20 to 25 percent of the body's total energy (总热量). That's 350 calories per day for woman and 450 for man. When you are five or six years old, your brain uses up to 60 percent of the body's energy, according to Live Science. When we are thinking hard, the brain burns more calories. In one experiment, researchers found that people who worked on a hard task (任务) on a computer ate around 200 more calories than those who were resting.
