Most of us believe that our parents will always be there for us. But that's not the case for stay-at home children. Their parents work in cities far from home, so they have to live with their grandparents in the countryside. There are millions of stay-at-home children in China, and most of them come from the countryside.
In fact, children living without their parents have to face many problems by themselves, and they hardly talk about them to their parents or grandparents. So it is not good for their safety and even mental (心理的) health. What's worse, their grandparents may not be able to help them with their homework or raise them properly. This can cause children to feel lonely or have an unhealthy personality.
The healthy development of both the physical and mental health is very important to stay-at-home children. So the government has taken some action to care for and protect stay-at-home children. For example, some social workers are sent to the countryside. They will report to the government if they find that some stay-at-home children are treated badly. Before the Spring Festival, the government provides those parents who work in other cities with free bus rides and calls on them to return home and celebrate the new year with their children. The guideline on further improving the care system for stay-at-home children and children living in difficulty has been issued(发行) in Fujian province, aiming to provide at least one welfare (福利) organization in every city by the end of 2020.
But the best way to solve the problem is that children can always stay with their parents. The government has encouraged these parents to return to their hometowns to look for work. Another solution is to make it easier for country children to go to school in big cities. Some of the government's efforts have paid off. The number of stay-at-home children has become much smaller.

Are you shy? If you are, you are not alone. It isn't a strange feeling, so do not be afraid when you feel shy. According to some studies, only 5 percent of people are sure that they never feel shy in their life. Scientists tried to understand shyness. They had some interesting ideas about why people are shy.
Is it possible to be born shy? Many scientists say yes. They find 15 to 20 percent of babies behaving(表现) shyly. These babies are a little quieter than other babies. Interestingly, these shy babies usually have shy parents. So, scientists think that shyness is partly genetic(遗传的).
Family size might cause people to be shy as well. Scientists at Harvard University found that children without elder brothers and sisters are usually shy. Growing up alone, they often play by themselves. They are not able to learn the same social skills as the children from big families.
Where you were born is one of the reasons, too. When scientists studied shyness in different countries, they found surprising differences. In Japan, most people said they were shy. But in Israel, only one in three people said so. What explains the difference? The Japanese and Israelis have different opinions on failure. In Japan, when people do not succeed, they always blame(责备) themselves for their failure. In Israel, when people fail, what their family, teachers, or friends always do is to encourage them to try again next time. So Israelis worry less about failure and are less shy.
For shy people, it can be difficult to make friends, speak in class, and even get a good job. They can't express their true feelings. But scientists say you can overcome(克服) your shyness. They suggest trying some new activities and practicing conversations. But do them properly. If you still can't overcome it, it's all right. Being shy is not surely a bad thing.

Let children learn to judge(判断) their own work
A child doesn't learn to talk by being corrected all the time. If he is corrected too much, he will stop talking. He notices a thousand times a day the differences between the language he uses and the language others use. Little by little, he makes the necessary changes to make his language like other people's.
In the same way, children learn to do all the other things without being taught - to walk, run, climb or ride a bicycle. They compare their performances with those of more skilled people, and slowly make the changes.
But in school we never give a child a chance to find out his mistakes and correct them himself. We do it all for him. We thought that he would never notice a mistake unless it was pointed out to him, or correct it unless he was made to. Soon he becomes dependent on the teacher.
Let him work out with the help of other children if he wants it. If it is a matter in math or science, give him the answer book. Let him correct his own papers. Why should we teachers waste time on such daily work? Our job should be to help the children when they tell us that they can' t find the way to get the right answer. Let the children learn what all educated persons must learn, how to measure(估量) their own understanding, how to know what they know or do not know. Let them get on with this job in their ways. School teachers can offer help if they ask for it. Some teachers are worried that the children might fail to learn something that they will need to get in the world. Don' t worry! If it is important, they will go out into the world and learn it.

Imagine the situation. You are an exchange student (交换生) from China and now you are learning French in a university in Paris. One day, you come into the kitchen of your apartment. Twenty minutes later, you cook several delicious French dishes. To everyone's surprise, you learn the French language at the same time! This kind of wonderful kitchen is called a French Digital Kitchen or a
"talking kitchen".
What do you think of the "talking kitchen"? A French Digital Kitchen has been developed at Newcastle University in the UK. It teaches students how to cook French food and speak French at the same time. For the first time, students can learn the language by following cooking steps.
All grammar and vocabulary have been carefully chosen to make sure the users can understand French well. After learning for some time, the users can test themselves by doing a short test on the computer.
The project was started by Professor Paul Seedhouse. He began to show interest in the idea after he visited another kind of talking kitchen. He said, "The purpose (目的) of the French Digital Kitchen is to make learning a language not boring any more. Students can get more fun and education at the same time. "
How does the kitchen work? There is a computer in the kitchen. With this computer, the users can first choose a French recipe ( 菜 谱 ) that they want to follow. Using information in the computer, the kitchen starts to guide the users how to make a French dish. If you follow the instructions (指示) on the computer, it moves on to the next. If you go wrong, the program goes back and shows the recipe or information again.
The new kitchen can be used in universities and even people's homes. The researchers can also be developing the European Digital Kitchen, for the next three years. They are sure that it will have a big market.
