在考试中，考生总会遇到这样一种情况：见到一个词非常眼熟，就是不能马上明白它的意思。

 

   众所周知，英语教材中的单词清单所给出的只是每个单词最基本和常见的意思，即“熟义”。然而，教材“熟词”在考试文章中却产生了“生义”，这便是人们常说的“熟词生义”现象。试卷对“熟词生义”的考查总是十分热衷。

 

熟词衍生新义大致分为两类情况：一是词性不变，二是词性有变。接下来，小编将会按照字母顺序总结出中学常见的这一类词，并举例说明其生义的用法。

 

S

1. save

 

熟义：vt. 挽救；拯救

生义：vt. & vi. 节省；节约；储蓄；积攒；保留；保存

It saves a lot of time for students to take a school bus.

学生们乘校车可以节省很多时间。

I’m saving up for a new computer.

我正在攒钱买一台新电脑。

Save some food for me. / Save me some food.

留些食物给我。

 

2. see

 

熟义：vt. & vi. 看见；看到

生义：vt. & vi. 理解；明白 vt. 遭受；经历

She has seen wars, earthquakes and death. 

她经历过战争、地震和死亡。

 

3. sense

 

熟义：n. 感官；感觉

生义：n. 意识；理解力；判断力；意思；意义

4. serve

 

熟义：vt. & vi. 服务；接待

生义：vt. & vi. 提供；担任

5. should

 

熟义：modal v. 应该；本应；必须

生义：modal v. 万一；竟然

6. sign

 

熟义：n. 标记；指示牌；符号；迹象；征兆

生义：vt. 签（名）；签字

7. since

 

熟义：conj. 自……以 来；从……以后

生义：conj. 因为；既然

He must have taken the book since it isn’t here.
他一定是把书拿走了，因为书已不在这里了。

Since you like the car, why don't you buy it?

既然你喜欢这辆车，为什么不买呢？

 

8. some

 

熟义：adj. 一些的；若干的

生义：某个；某一

Some person at the door wants to see you.

门口有个人要见你。我确信有一天他会成功。

 

9. spare

 

熟义：adj. 空闲的

生义：adj. 备用的；闲置的 vt.抽出；腾出

10. spring

 

熟义：n. 春天

12. stand

 

熟义：vi. 站立

生义：vi. 位于（某处）vt. 容忍；忍受 n. 架；货摊

Our teaching building stands in the middle of our school.

I can’t stand bad manners in public.

我不能忍受公共场合的不礼貌行为。

13. state

 

熟义：n. 国家；领土；州

生义：n. 状态；情况 vt. 陈述；说明

Being rich is a state of mind.

“I had the highest score in the class,” I proudly stated.

14. still

 

熟义：adv. 仍然；还；但还是；不过

生义：adv.［修饰比较级］更 adj. 不动的；静止的

It was cold yesterday, but today it’s colder still. 

昨天天冷，但今天更冷。

Keep still while I brush your hair. 

我给你梳头时，你不要动。

 

15. suggest

 

熟义：vt. 建议；提议；提出

生义：vt. 表明；暗示

Her expression suggested (that) she was angry.

她的表情说明她生气了。

 

16. support

 

熟义：vt. 支持；支撑；承受（重量）

生义：vt. 供养；为……提供资金

He has a big family to support.

他有一个大家庭要养活。

She has supported many poor students to college.

她已经资助了很多贫困学生上大学。

1. tell

 

熟义：vt. 告诉；讲述

生义：vt. 辨别；分辨

Can you tell the difference between the twins?

你能分清这对双胞胎吗？

Sometimes, we can’t tell the true from the false.

有时候，我们不能分辨真伪。

 

2. train

 

熟义：n. 火车

生义：vt. & vi.（受）训练；（受）培训

She trained hard, so she became a great player later.

3. treat

 

熟义：vt. 对待；看待；招待；请（客）

生义：vt. 医疗；治疗

They treat thousands of blind people every year.

1. watch

 

熟义：vt. & vi. 观看；注视 n. 手表

生义：vt.（短时间）照看；当心；留意

2. well

 

熟义：adv. 好；令人满意地;非常 adj. 健康的

生义：n. 井

3. when

 

熟义：conj. 当……时

生义：conj. 一……就……；如果

The kids went crazy when the film star appeared.

那位影星一出场，孩子们就欣喜若狂。

4. while

 

熟义：conj. 当……的时候；和……同时

生义：conj. ［表示对比］而

5. will

 

熟义：modal v.［表示单纯的将来］将要；会

生义：n. 意志；决心；遗嘱

熟义：vt. 想知道
