It'll soon be the birthday of one of my closest friends, Susie. I still cannot decide what to give her. She's a rare friend because she has been there for me all the time whenever I need a friend to talk to. I can always depend on her to be the first to arrive to give me advice when I have problems. I guess I am so lucky to have her as a friend.

Your best friend can probably tell when you are in a bad mood. Your dog usually knows when you feel like playing ball. Now scientists say that horses can recognize human feelings, too.

Researchers at the University of Sussex in England found that hourses can tell when a person is happy or angry by reading people’s faces. The only other animals to have this ability are dogs.

This study was done with 28 horses over the course of a year. The horses were shown photos of a person with happy or angry expressions. When they looked at the angry faces, the horses' heart rate increased more quickly than when they looked at the happy faces.

The horses also turned their heads to look at angry faces with left eyes--a sign that they recognized the expression as a negative one. Many animals position their heads to see negative events with their left eyes, which is connected to the part of the brain that processes threatening (有威胁性的）events.

Amy Smith, who led the study, wasn’t surprised to learn that horses can read the looks on people’s faces. People and horses have been working together for about 6,000 years, ever since humans began domesticating (驯服) the animals to help with transportation and farming. It’s possible that horses developed the ability to recognize human feelings.

A smiling human is more likely to be friendly and give them food, while an angry human is more likely to be gruff to them, explains Amy Smith. If horses can understand a human’s feelings, then they will know when they should get close to people or stay away.

Smith and her team plan to keep learning about how horses read people. We’re also interested in whether horses can recognize human feelings through our voices and body language, says Smith.

A French company has produced a new type of camera that recognizes faces and tells people if a stranger has entered their home.

Many homes now have security cameras (监控摄像机）that tell owners if someone has entered. But the cameras do not know if the person is a family member, friend, or a criminal. They don’t know the difference, so they will warn you all the time.

But a new camera made by a company named Netatmo has facial recognition software (软件) that can tell parents at work that their children have returned from school, or that a parcel has been sent to their home. It can also tell them if a stranger has entered their home.
